One of the remarkable accomplishments of mobile phone technology is that all segments of society could benefit from it regardless of their economic status. People from all walks of life are getting helped by the state-of-the-art features integrated into the mobile phones. The second and third generation technologies could offer even the low end users the opportunity to watch television, listen to music, shoot photos and browse the internet. It can be said without fear of ambiguity that no other device has to it’s credit, such substantial achievements, as the cell phone. Internet access is available whenever or wherever it is desired . Users are able to update face book status, use twitter, check emails and read newspapers round the clock while connected to internet through mobile phone. But all these are possible only if the mobile phone is featured with adequate connectivity standards.
There are many options available for the mobile users in this context. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a slow mode of internet connectivity. EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is a better tool than GPRS. Many mobile phones are available with both the above connectivity. They are classified as 2.5G indicating its capabilities. Then comes the third generation or 3G feature which offers broadband connectivity to the mobile phones. The facility adds capability to offer video calls and is much faster than GPRS and EDGE. Technology is progressing further, looking beyond 3G. High speed Down Link Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3.5G option with the fastest speed featured in smart phones like iPhone.
Even though mobiles are now widely used and in many countries the sale of this device exceeds that of landline phones, cost factor is a deterrent for sizable segments of the population to acquire them. This is more evident especially in the case of smart phones based on 3G or higher levels of technology. Touch screens are considered as the best option to avail full benefits of the innovative technology. Many other features are available only on smart phones based on 3G and it is therefore necessary for consumers to go for sophisticated products in order to reap the benefits of the most advanced technology. There is silver lining in the otherwise worrisome scenario where low end users experience many constraints due to cost factor. Prices of all consumer oriented products decline in the course of time, when production and sale increases. This phenomenon occurs in an environment surcharged with competitive spirit among the market players. Manufactures will be forced to reduce prices in order to survive in the competitive market. The theory applies to smart phones also. Their prices will come down in the course of time making them affordable to large segments of the society, if the past experience is an indication to that.
Market reports indicate that the worldwide smart phone industry has successfully survived the onslaught of recession. Products sale is in upswing notwithstanding the economic turbulence experienced in the recent past. Global shipments of mobile phones will grow by 12 percent to touch 1.33 billion units in 2010 and the smart phone segment will have growth of 30 percent, according to some research reports. It is projected that 235 million units of smart phones will be sold in the year.
